Teen Therapy
At the centre of my practice at Nurturing Play Therapy is relationship and connection with my services extending into pre-teen and teens. The service I offer teens looks differently to the traditional method of Play Therapy and Talk Therapy. As a Social Worker and Play Therapist with nearly 2 decades of experience of working with teens I call upon my many skills and methods of engagement to hold space, empower and simply ‘be in relationship’ with them.
Grounded in a person-centred, family and systems and strengths-based approach, I collaborate with each teen to support them through their challenges while empowering and celebrating their abilities and uniqueness. Whether your teen is working through anxiety, trauma, identity, relationships or self-esteem, I honour the individuality and tailor my approach to their needs and interests.
The teen leads the sessions and there is no expectation to talk or communicate verbally. With extensive experience and knowledge in offering expressive therapies teens can express and communicate through sand tray, art, movement, music and play.
During the intake process I get to know the teen more - understanding their interests, discovering what brings them joy and I ensure this is incorporated into their sessions. The teen is a part of developing their own goals for therapy with a focus on being supported while having ownership over their journey. My approach offers a playful and expressive way to communicate feelings, approach challenges, problem solve and unpack their inner world, without the pressure of talking. Teens are invited to engage in a process of self-discovery that feels safe, supportive and deeply validating. While verbal communication is not required, if a teen chooses this form of communication in session they are supported to do so – I am always led by the child and returning power back to them in their sessions.
At Nurturing Play Therapy your child will feel accepted for exactly who they are, celebrated and supported to continue to build their strengths and abilities. The teen will be welcomed into a space that is non-judgemental and safe for all feelings to be expressed.
This is not just therapy, it’s a space where teens are truly seen, heard, and valued. A space to reflect, to heal, and to grow. If you’re looking for a supportive path forward for your teen, I’m here to walk alongside them in their journey.
