EMDR Therapy
Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy is a form of psychotherapy, developed by psychologist, Francine Shapiro, in the late 1980’s as a method in treating trauma. EMDR is a high effective evidenced based form of therapy. Being one of the most researched forms of psychotherapy EMDR is becoming one of the most recognised and used form of therapy to support healing traumatic memories.
EMDR uses bilateral stimulation (visual - eye movement, tactile - tapping or hand held pulsators and auditory - alternating tone or music) to engage both brain hemispheres through rhythmic left to right side stimulation while focused on the traumatic memory. The bilateral stimulation mimics natural REM sleep cycle which is where our brains process emotional experiences. EMDR also for the memory to be in the past and reduce the vividness.
The process helps reprocess traumatic or ‘stuck’ memories to reduce the distress and heal from the symptoms associated with those memories.
EMDR is an 8 phase process with different protocols / process for adult and children. EMDR is integrated playfully into play therapy sessions with children. Depending on the child’s age and abilities the parent may be encouraged to be apart of this process. As an Accredited Mental Health Social Worker (AMHSW) EMDR is recognised as a Focused psychology Strategy (FPS) which is one of the treatment methods an AMHSW can use as part of treatment under a Mental Health Treatment PlEMDR can supports clients with anxiety, depression, trauma, PTSD, grief and loss.
